Ruth, Alf and their children, Melanie and David, were my neighbours for the first 24 years of my life. David and I were in each others' houses all the time, and Ruth was to be found being busy, constantly. It seemed to me that if the wallpaper had been up for a couple of months, it was bound to be time to replace it. Such a hard-working, cheerful and sensible person- a true matriarch. That kind of attitude is how you get to be 102! Ruth was a one-off, a hard act to follow. God rest her soul.
